About Halal Afrika
Halal Afrika is an interdenominational gospel music collective and worship movement that serves as a pan-African platform for spiritual unity. Conceived in Maryland, USA, in 2016 by the Onn Brothers and a group of like-minded African ministers, the project was born from a desire to bring localized, impactful African gospel songs to a global audience. The group's name is derived from the Hebrew word "Halal," meaning "Praise," and their mission focuses on transcending borders by bringing together artists from across the continent to record and share indigenous worship songs.
The collective is renowned for its high-production live recording sessions, which have taken place in various locations including Baltimore, Maryland, and Pretoria, South Africa. Their sound is a rich tapestry of African praise, blending contemporary worship with native melodies and languages from across the continent. Over the years, Halal Afrika has collaborated with an impressive roster of gospel icons, including Joe Mettle, Team Eternity Ghana, Jekalyn Carr, VaShawn Mitchell, and Takesure Zamar, establishing itself as one of the most influential collaborative forces in modern African gospel.
In April 2026, the group reached a new milestone with the release of their expansive live album, On Bended Knees. Recorded in South Africa, this 15-track project features a global lineup of ministers and has already produced standout hits like "Grateful" and the "African Praise Medley." Through their biannual events and consistent digital presence, Halal Afrika continues to foster a "revival" atmosphere, using music as a bridge to unite diverse cultures under a singular banner of worship.
