About Obaapa Christy

Obaapa Christy (born Christiana Twene on 7 December) is an iconic Ghanaian gospel musician, songwriter, and ordained reverend minister who is widely celebrated as the "Queen of Ghana Gospel Music." Hailing from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, she discovered her passion for singing at a tender age during family devotions and school assemblies. She began her professional journey with the vibrant Kumasi-based musical group, The Hallelujah Voices, before being mentored into a solo career by gospel veteran Osuani Afrifa. Formerly performing under the stage name Christiana Love, she achieved a massive national breakthrough with her 2002 debut album Me Te Ase, instantly captivating audiences with her uniquely deep, soulful, and resonant vocal delivery. Over a career spanning more than two decades, she has established herself as an institutional trailblazer in contemporary African gospel music, releasing over a dozen highly successful studio projects including Hyebre Sesafo, W'agye Me, and her 15th studio album Odeneho. Her profound impact has been recognized with numerous elite accolades, sweepingly winning Gospel Artist of the Year, Gospel Song of the Year, and Best Female Vocal Performance at the 2007 Ghana Music Awards, alongside being named the ultimate Artiste of the Year at the maiden National Gospel Music Awards. Her exceptional contributions to the nation's cultural fabric were officially cemented when she was conferred with a prestigious National Honor by former Ghanaian President John Kufuor. Serving as an enduring role model, her uplifting melodies and powerful ministrations continue to shape the soundscape of modern praise and worship across West Africa and the global diaspora.
