From Backporch Builder to TV Star: The Incredible Metamorphosis of J Paul the Carpenter
High-profile names in music and sports have quietly relied on one man to elevate their luxury spaces. Hip-hop icon T.I. and his wife, Tiny, commissioned two custom California king-sized daybed swings from him. Hitmaker T-Pain tapped him for a bespoke mobile studio booth, while basketball star Lou Williams secured a custom-designed studio desk.
Now, the craftsman behind these high-end creations is stepping into a massive national spotlight.
The building industry has long recognized this talent. Massive corporate powerhouses like The Home Depot, Behr Paint, and KILZ Primer have formed lucrative alliances with him, and Timberland PRO serves as his official sponsor. In fact, his work fronting the Destination Restoration series on YouTube for KILZ Primer offered a sneak peek of his on-camera potential.
Yet, despite a decade spent building a formidable reputation while working right off his back porch, his platform is about to expand exponentially.
The Big Network Reveal
A secret kept under wraps for nearly a year has finally been made public. On Wednesday, 15 July, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, HGTV will premiere a fresh 12-episode series titled Worst Yard on the Block. Starring as the co-host alongside Tucker Kincaid, the duo will travel the nation to rescue horrific outdoor spaces and transform them into residential masterpieces.
"Listen, I’ve been holding on to this for the past 10 months," the builder shared, expressing deep gratitude for the community that supported him through conferences, messages, and social media shares. "And I must say, this one means a lot to me."
Masterclass in Precision: From Aircraft to Artistry
This television milestone is the culmination of a deliberate, multi-year reinvention. Long before he was creating fine furniture in the creative epicenter of Atlanta, Georgia, he was developing a rigorous technical foundation.
Far from an amateur hobbyist, his mastery of structure and materials was forged in the aerospace sector. His professional resume boasts structural work on elite military and commercial aircraft, including:
The iconic Black Hawk helicopter
The massive C-17 transport aircraft
The advanced Global Hawk spy plane
Gulfstream 4 and 5 luxury jets
Various Boeing commercial aircraft
This intense, industrial background provided him with the precise, imaginative edge that caught the attention of Atlanta’s elite.
The Sonic Roots
Before the sawdust and blueprints, however, the world knew this creator through an entirely different medium. Jared Foster first made waves in the music industry, operating under the moniker J Paul the Carpenter.
Originally hailing from the streets of Dallas, Texas, he spent two intense years touring the globe alongside Lecrae. That musical era reached its zenith when his distinct vocals featured on Lecrae’s smash hit "All I Need Is You," a track that went on to secure a Grammy nomination.
Reflecting on that whirlwind chapter in showbiz, he notes that the thrilling experience ultimately served as the perfect springboard for his transition into full-time craftsmanship. With his upcoming HGTV debut, that transition is officially complete.
